When to Use Modifier XE
Use modifier XE when two services are provided in separate, distinct encounters on the same calendar day and need to be differentiated on the claim. It is a more specific subset of modifier 59, used when the distinction is specifically an encounter-level separation. Payers who have adopted the X{EPSU} modifiers may require XE in place of 59.
