Place of Service Code 02: Telehealth - Other than Patient's Home
What is Place of Service Code 02?
POS 02 indicates a telehealth service where the patient is located somewhere other than their own residence — such as a hotel, employer site, school, or any location that is not their permanent home. The provider may be in their own office or another facility. CMS and most commercial payers use this code for the majority of standard telehealth psychotherapy claims.
When to Use POS 02
Use POS 02 when delivering a synchronous audio-video therapy session and the patient is not at their home address. This is the default telehealth POS for most non-Medicare claims when the patient is in a clinic, school, or other non-home location.

- ✗Selecting POS 11 (office) out of habit instead of POS 02 for telehealth visits
- ✗Failing to document the patient's location in the session note, leading to audit risk
Adding POS 02 to a Superbill
Superbilled lets you specify the Place of Service code on every superbill you generate. When creating a superbill with POS 02, ensure your NPI, the patient's diagnosis code, date of service, fee charged, and amount paid are all included. The correct POS code helps insurers process your claim accurately and avoid unnecessary denials.
