Place of Service Code 10: Telehealth - Patient's Home
What is Place of Service Code 10?
POS 10 designates a telehealth service where the patient is located at their own home. This code was introduced to distinguish home-based telehealth from other telehealth settings, which became especially important after the COVID-19 public health emergency. Both Medicare and commercial payers increasingly require POS 10 when the patient joins a session from their residence.
When to Use POS 10
Use POS 10 when delivering synchronous audio-video therapy and the patient is at their home address. This is the correct code for the vast majority of private-pay and commercially insured telehealth therapy sessions conducted since 2022.

Common Mistakes with POS 10
- ✗Using POS 02 instead of POS 10 when the patient is at their home
- ✗Forgetting to append a telehealth modifier, which causes the claim to process as in-person
- ✗Mixing POS 10 with in-person CPT codes not approved for telehealth
- ✗Not confirming with each payer whether POS 10 is accepted or if POS 02 is still required
Adding POS 10 to a Superbill
Superbilled lets you specify the Place of Service code on every superbill you generate. When creating a superbill with POS 10, ensure your NPI, the patient's diagnosis code, date of service, fee charged, and amount paid are all included. The correct POS code helps insurers process your claim accurately and avoid unnecessary denials.
