How Out-of-Network Deductibles Work
When you see an out-of-network (OON) therapist, you typically pay 100% of the fee until you've met your OON deductible for the year. After that, your insurer shares the cost through coinsurance — you pay a percentage (commonly 20–40%) and they cover the rest, up to your out-of-pocket maximum.
For example: if your OON deductible is $3,000 and your therapist charges $175/session, you'd pay full price for the first 18 sessions (~$3,150). Session 19 onward, you'd only pay your coinsurance share — say 30%, or $52.50/session — until your OOP max is reached.
What Is Coinsurance?
Coinsurance is the percentage of the allowed amount youpay after meeting your deductible. A 30% coinsurance rate means you pay 30% of the covered charge and your insurer pays 70%. Note: insurers use their own “allowed amount,” which may be less than your therapist's actual fee — always request an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) to see exactly what was applied.
Superbills and Out-of-Network Reimbursement
To submit an OON claim to your insurance company, you'll need a superbillfrom your therapist. A superbill is an itemized receipt containing diagnostic codes (ICD-10), procedure codes (CPT), provider NPI, and the amount charged and paid. Submit it to your insurer along with a claim form to apply the payment toward your deductible.
Superbilled lets therapists generate compliant superbill PDFs in seconds — so clients can get reimbursed faster and deductibles are tracked accurately.
Tips for Managing Your OON Therapy Costs
- Ask your therapist for a superbill after every session — don't let them pile up
- Submit claims monthly so reimbursements arrive before your next billing cycle
- Check whether your plan has a separate OON deductible or a shared in/out-of-network deductible
- Once you're close to your OOP max, sessions become significantly cheaper — consider scheduling ahead
- Keep an EOB for every session to verify what your insurer applied to your deductible
