Compatibility Notes

Appropriate when a patient develops anxiety symptoms in response to a specific identifiable stressor, without meeting criteria for a primary anxiety disorder. This is a short-term, time-limited diagnosis expected to resolve within 6 months of stressor removal. Most commercial plans cover 10–20 sessions without prior authorization.

Documentation Required

  • Session start and stop times confirming 53+ minutes
  • Stressor documented with onset date
  • Anxiety symptoms causally linked to the stressor and causing functional impairment
  • Absence of criteria for a primary anxiety disorder (F41.1, F40.10, etc.) noted in assessment
  • Time-limited treatment plan

Common Denial Reasons

  • Stressor onset date missing from clinical notes
  • Duration beyond 6 months without diagnosis update
  • Anxiety symptoms appear consistent with a primary anxiety disorder without documentation of the differential

Reimbursement Notes

OON UCR $130–$210. Some plans enforce shorter session limits for adjustment disorders; document evidence-based interventions and ongoing impairment to support extended authorization if needed.
